Strangelove festival reveals new line up of Kent films The Strangelove festival, which celebrates the diversity of time-based media with exhibitions, screenings, talks and performances, has revealed its new ‘Kent Kino’ strand, which launches on Saturday November 28th, 2020.
This year’s event is again curated by Kent-based filmmaker Ben Barton. He says, “At the moment, we can't have the physical experience of visiting a space outside of our homes to enjoy the arts. I wanted this new collection to remind you of that feeling of being in a gallery or cinema, even though we are all at home”. He continues, “This year I was inspired to choose female visionaries, womxn who use moving visual images to challenge, inspire, and to tell their stories”.
The film and video work featured at the online festival include ‘Emotional Distancing’ by Hannah Whittaker, a piece conceived and filmed in a time of isolation and lockdown, using the now familiar visual layout of a Zoom call. Other striking pieces include ‘Confessions of a Statue’ by Helga Dorothea, which continues the artist’s practice of combining fiction and reality using dreamlike images to fuse time and memory.
At launch there are nine films, all exclusively from female artists. This selection will grow and evolve over the coming weeks, as the festival continues into December.
